Colombo: Sri Lanka on Tuesday, on the basis of the brilliant half-century by Kusum Perera (66) India defeated India by five wickets in the first match of the Nidas Trophy tournament played at Premadasa Stadium. Batting first after losing the toss, the Indian team gave the target of 175 runs to Sri Lanka, thanks to the best personal innings of opener Shikhar Dhawan (90).
Coming to pursue this goal, the Sri Lankan cricket team lost their first wicket as Kusle Mendis (11). He was caught in the hands of Shikhar Dhawan on the Washington beautiful ball.
After this, Kusal, who came with the help of Danushka Gunnilka (19), batted brilliantly and took the team's innings and shared 58 runs. The Indian bowlers, after a lot of trouble, finally got success.
In an attempt to kill a long shot at the angle of Unadkat, Gunnilka was hijacked by Rishabh Pant. Kushal, with Gunnilka, has half-century partnership in less than four overs.
Captain Dinesh Chandimal (14) Kaushal has been brought back to play after Gunnil-ul-Haq was dismissed. Meanwhile, Kusal, playing his 31st T-20 match of his career, completed his eighth fifty.
Chandimal and Kusle added 28 runs to the team to score 98, and on this score, Yuswendra Chahal gave India another success by making Captain Chandimal bold.
Sri Lanka needed 77 runs to win and their seven wickets still left. The Kushals, who were able to get rid of the Indian bowlers' sweat with their smoky batting on one end of the pitch, were still standing.
Kusal shared 28 runs with Upul Tharanga (17) and helped the team score a score of 127. On this score, Dinesh Karthik, standing behind the wicket on the Washington ball, stumped Kusle.
Kusal made six fours and four sixes in 37 balls. Though he was out, but he made the win easier for Sri Lanka. The hosts were now to score 48 runs in 42 balls to win.
Here, Tharanga handled the team's innings with Dasun Shanaka (15 not out). On the fourth ball of 14 overs, Rishabh left the catch of Tharanga and gave him life. However, this was not persisted for a long time and Chahal bowled Tharanga to 136 for Sri Lanka's fifth wicket.
Sri Lanka, who started strong with Kusal's excellent batting in the powerplay, was now getting weak. He needed 37 runs in 29 balls.
Thisara Perera (22 not out) for the sixth wicket with Shanaaka landed on the field. Both were engaged in trying to achieve the goal in some way. The match had come on the exciting turn. Three overs were left and Sri Lanka still had to score 24 runs.
While Sri Lanka were to score 2 runs on each ball, Indian bowlers had to prevent Sri Lanka from making runs and get the remaining five wickets. Here's the look of your sixes? Chargers brought the team to the target and won by five wickets.
In this innings, Washington and Chahal took two wickets each for India, while Unadkat got a breakthrough.
