IPL 2018, Match 36: Sunrisers Hyderabad edge Delhi Daredevils in thriller to top points table

Yusuf Pathan (27 no off 12 balls) and skipper Kane Williamson (32 no off 30 balls) kept their calm to help Sunrisers Hyderabad surpass the 164-run target against Delhi Daredevils on a tricky surface.

Delhi Daredevils paid the price for flawed team selection and poor fielding as Sunrisers Hyderabadpushed them towards exit door with a seven-wicket victory in an IPL encounter in Hyderabad on Saturday. Yusuf Pathan (27 no off 12 balls) and skipper Kane Williamson (32 no off 30 balls) kept their calm surpassing the 164-run target in 19.5 overs on a tricky surface. Pathan's dropped catch by Vijay Shankar was one of the game-changing moments during the chase.
Despite Amit Mishra's (2/19 in 4 overs) brilliant bowling, the lack of second specialist spinners hurt Delhi dearly as Avesh Khan (0/47 in 3 overs) and Dan Christian (0/37 in 3.5 overs) gave away 84 runs in less than seven overs which proved to be decisive.
Sunrisers maintained their pole position with 14 points from nine games while Delhi after their seventh defeat are almost out of the competition. Only a mathematical possibility remains if they win all their remaining four home games.
Opener Alex Hales (45, 31 balls) was dropped by Maxwell at deep mid-wicket boundary off Avesh Khan's bowling when the batsman was on 9.
Avesh, however, got a rough treatment, when he was taken to cleaners with 27 runs coming off his second over with Hales hitting him for three sixes and Shikhar Dhawan (33 off 30 balls) the other.
It was Amit Mishra, who finally got the much need breakthrough with a brilliant delivery.
The delivery was a copybook leg-break that pitched on good length and turned sharply as it beat Hales' lunging willow to clip the off-stump. It was unplayable delivery as Hales looked in utter disbelief. Hales hit three boundaries and three sixes, adding 76 for the opening stand with Dhawan.
The India opener was the next to depart when he yorked himself tried to slog sweep Mishra and was clean bowled.

Earlier, Delhi Daredevils could not cash in on the brilliant platform laid by young Prithvi Shaw as Sunrisers Hyderabad restricted them to 163 for 5 in stipulated 20 overs. Shaw smashed 65 off 36 balls but after scoring 95 in the first 10 overs, DD managed only 67 in the back 10 with the pitch getting slower and the odd delivery holding up.
Leg-spinner Rashid Khan (2/23 in 4 overs) was the most impressive bowler for Sunrisers as he put the brakes in the second half of the Delhi innings. Shaw once again provided a blazing start, reaching to his second IPL half-century in only 25 balls. His innings had six boundaries and three huge sixes.
He teed off with six over long on off Sandeep Sharma and then lofted Shakib Al Hasan inside out for his second maximum. The most fruitful over was the final one in the Powerplay where Shaw literally got stuck into Siddarth Kaul, hitting him for six and three boundaries.
The 18-year-old is one of the cleanest hitters among the 'Gen-Next' players. With a slight backfoot trigger towards leg-stump, the Mumbaikar makes room and plays his shots all around the wicket. While there is a preference for straight hits, he is equally adept in hitting the cut shots and is not afraid to pull the short balls when the need arises.
Till Shaw was taking on the bowlers, his skipper Shreyas Iyer (44 off 36 balls) played the second fiddle to perfection during their 86-run stand. Shaw was finally out when he tried to hit Rashid Khan against the turn, gifting a simple catch to Kaul at the short third man.
Skipper Iyer was looking good for another half-century before his attempted flick shot off Siddarth Kaul's bowling was snapped by Shikhar Dhawan at deep mid-wicket.
Delhi's top run-getter in the season, Rishabh Pant (18 off 19 balls) was off-colour as Rashid trapped him leg-before. Naman Ojha, getting his first look-in in the tournament, was run-out. From 95 for 1, Delhi slumped to 134 for 5 in the space of 6.4 overs.
It was Vijay Shankar (23 off 13 balls), who gave Bhuvneshwar Kumar, coming back from injury, the charge to take Delhi past 160-run mark.

IPL 2018, Match 11: Samson, Gopal star as Rajasthan Royals beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 19 runs

Riding on Samson's unbeaten 92, Rajasthan Royals posted a huge total of 217/4 on a batting belter at M. Chinnaswamy and then managed to restrict the Royal Challengers Bangalore to 198/6, earning their second victory in three games of IPl 2018.

Sanju Samson's breathtaking strokeplay formed the cornerstone of Rajasthan Royals' 19-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in a high-scoring IPL encounter in Bengaluru on Sunday. Riding on Samson's 45-ball-92, Rajasthan Royals posted a huge total of 217 for 4 on a batting belter and then managed to restrict the home team to 198 for 6, earning their second victory in three games.
RCB, on the other hand, slumped to their second defeat in three games despite skipper Virat Kohli (57 off 30 balls)'s first half-century of this edition. It was 'local boy ' Shreyas Gopal who removed a rampaging Kohli in the 11th over to turn the match decisively in his team's favour. Kohli's pull shot was taken at deep mid-wicket by Darcy Short, who timed his jump to perfection.
Leg-spinner Gopal, who plays Ranji Trophy for Karnataka, then silenced his 'home crowd' knocking out AB de Villiers, whose poorly executed pull-shot was snapped by Jaydev Unadkat at the deep square leg.
Washington Sundar (35 off 19 balls) and Mandeep Singh (47 no off 25 balls) added 66 runs for the fifth wicket but they were left with an uphill task as the asking rate kept on mounting.
Put into bat, Samson sent the bowlers on a leather hunt hitting as many as 10 sixes and two fours. The Kerala-born scored his half-century off 34 balls, showing one and all why he is so highly rated by India A coach Rahul Dravid.
In Jos Buttler (213 off 14), Samson found an able partner as they put on 73 runs in just 37 balls. Umesh Yadav after his 'man of the match' effort against KXIP was completely off-colour going for 59 runs in 4 wicketless overs. The last three overs yielded 60 runs for the Royals.

Samson first got 16 runs off Kulwant Khejroliya, who bowled the 18th over and then hammered Woakes for 17 off the penultimate over by smashing a six and two consecutive fours.
He saved his best for the last plundering Umesh for 27 runs that hit three sixes and a boundary. Only Yuzvendra Chahal had respectable figures of 2 for 22 in 4 overs.
Earlier, Rajasthan began their innings with a flurry of boundaries hit by skipper Ajinkya Rahane (36 off 20 balls). He then clobbered 14 runs of off-spinner Washington Sundar by hitting a boundary and a six. In next over, he belted two more boundaries off Yadav, taking the score to 33 for no loss.
Woakes, however, had the last laugh by getting Rahane, whose miscued hit landed straight into the hands of Yadav after he had struck six boundaries and a six.
Soon D Arcy Short top-edged which landed safely into the hands of wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock after he had made 11 runs off 17 balls with one boundary, leaving the score at 53 for two in 6.5 overs.
Samson and Ben Stokes put on 49 runs partnership for the fourth wicket in 33 balls before the England batsman was out scoring 27 off 21 balls with two boundaries and a six.

20.30 IST: Imran Tahir comes into the attack.
20.29 IST: SIX! Go fetch that! Chahar roams in the zone near Gayle's hitting area. The southpaw latches onto it and sends it packing over long off for another biggie in this over. He has gone bonkers. KXIP 75/0 in 5.5 overs.
20.28 IST: FOUR! The crowd is having a ball, Gayle is punishing Chahar here. A length ball outside off, angling away, Gayle punches it down the ground and gets another boundary at long off.
20.27 IST: SIX! The Jamaican is in the mood. He stands back, fetches a length ball from around off and muscles it over mid-wicket for a 91m monster.
20.25 IST: FOUR! Boom! Back of a length delivery on middle, Gayle eases himself on the back foot and pulls it with great power through mid on. The fielder gives the chase but the ball wins the race. 14 from the over!

20.23 IST: EDGED AND FOUR! A full length delivery outside off, Gayle tries to drill it through covers but it takes the outside edge and flies through the gap between the keeper and wide first slip fielder for a boundary.
20.20 IST: FOUR! Sublime! What timing on that cover drive. Wow, KL Rahul is looking in great touch yet again. Just leans into the shot and strokes it past the mid off fielder. No stopping this one. Punjab are away in style.
20.18 IST: FOUR! A poor delivery by the off spinner, fails to land it and Rahul cashes in on the full toss. Hammers it through covers, finds the gap and fetches a boundary.
20.16 IST: SIX! Gayle gets into form with this strike. Start the motor, Gayle is about to fly! Harbhajan slows this one in the air and lands it full around off, Gayle dismisses it from his presence as he sends it packing over long off.
20.14 IST: FOUR! Rahul pulls off this short-pitched delivery for a boundary. Went to the fence in the blink of an eye! A short delivery, on middle and leg, KL Rahul walks forward a bit and pulls it with utmost disdain to the deep backward square leg fence. With some movement on offer, Chahar should concentrate on bowling full. KXIP 20/0 in 2.5 overs.
20.08 IST: FOUR! A gentle push from the giant batsman and it has gone for a boundary. Flighted and full outside off, a good cover drive from Gayle, that.

20.05 IST: Deepak Chahar to Lokesh Rahul, no run. Ouch, that would have hurt! Chahar delivers a sharp delivery, 141.7 kph, on the shorter side around middle, Rahul tries to pull but is beaten for pace. Takes a blow on the box and is down on his haunches in pain. Physio comes out. Not sure what help he can offer at this time. Just catch your breath back and wait for the pain to go, KL.
